The Carugate Skatepark certainly represents the starting point of the experience that led to the creation of the Skate Martesana project and the need to build facilities with durable materials, as well as the development of the Skate Public Space project.

The facility was founded in 2004 at the suggestion of local skaters who joined the Carugate Skateboard Team - Polisportiva Carugate association, and was one of the first skateparks in our area.

Built out of wood by the Nelzi company in 2004, the CST association added a half pipe and a wooden ledge a year later.

For several years, the Carugate park became a hub for our area, given the total lack of dedicated skateboarding facilities. Numerous initiatives were organized, from contests to courses to concerts.

However, after just a few years, the wood began to show worrying signs of deterioration, and despite efforts to maintain it, in 2011, thanks to the commitment of the local community and the Municipality of Carugate, the Carugate structures were replaced with smaller aluminum structures made by the Cambiago-based company All Ramps.

We would like to point out that wood was the primary material used in the early 2000s for skatepark construction, and there were many structures made from this material in our area, especially half pipes (present in Cologno 1999/2000, Gorgonzola-Pessano 2002, Caponago 2003, Melzo 2005). Virtually none of these structures remained after 3-4 years, meaning the wood was unsuitable for outdoor use.

In 2011, thanks to the efforts of the All Ramps company and their association, Skate All Asd, the first indoor skatepark in the area, the Ministry of Skateboarding in Vimercate, was opened.

Activities in the Martesana and nearby Brianza areas were concentrated at this facility, which became the hub of the skate school's activities and local contests.

After five wonderful seasons at this facility and hundreds of members, in 2016, the All Ramps company began winding down its business, and the Skate All Association consequently ceased its activities.

It was precisely at this time that our friends from Carugate Skateboard Team and Asd Skate All decided to join forces and create the Skate Martesana project. Their goal was to continue promoting skateboarding in our area, particularly the creation of modern skateparks, at a time when skateboarding was on the verge of becoming an Olympic sport during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This resulted in a significant effort to bring the facilities at the Vimercate skatepark to the Carugate Skatepark and create a hub for our area among what were, at the time, the only skateboarding associations present.

Some of the structures were purchased by the Municipality of Carugate and installed by the All Ramps company, with the help of many passionate friends of the Martesana area.

Between the winter of 2018 and 2019, the Carugate facility was enriched with four new structures that completed the skatepark's design.

Carugate Skateboard Team-Polisportiva Carugate and Asd Skate All joined forces to create a small skate school, the Start Skate School, to continue the educational project begun at the Ministry of Skateboarding in Vimercate.

The Carugate skatepark has undergone renovations over the last 20 years, moving from wood to aluminum. Despite its age, it remains a good basic facility, suitable for daily use.

However, despite our affection for this facility, it should be emphasized that this is a MODEL SKATEPARK from another era in skateboarding's history. A model closer to the 1990s and 2000s than the current era, both in terms of materials and design.

Obviously, for the small park in Carugate, the inclusion of structures from the Ministry represented a step forward, as well as a way to pursue our passion and the projects initiated by local sports associations.

However, we believe it's important to send a clear message to any municipality preparing to build a new skatepark: wood, aluminum, and plastic are not the future of skateboarding, and in our opinion, they're not ideal for building new public outdoor skateparks, not to mention all the associated maintenance issues.

These types of materials, however, may be suitable for temporary activities and/or occasional events, but they aren't a viable option for outdoor public facilities, nor are they economically advantageous in the medium to long term.

For all municipalities, we recommend always considering modern concrete structures, seeking guidance from our relevant Federation and industry specialists.

  • ASSOCIAZIONI DI RIFERIMENTO: Carugate Skateboard team - Skate Martesana
  • COMMITTENTE: Comune di Carugate (Mi)

  • ANNO DI REALIZZAZIONE: 2004, 2011 - I fase di rinnovamento, 2018 - II fase di rinnovamento
  • AZIENDA COSTRUTTRICE: All Ramps
